So I just bought my wife a 2005 escape, and only got about 150 miles outa the first tank of gas ;-(, and same with the second tank, and about 3\4 of the way through the second tank of gas, the check engine light came on, so I took it to the auto parts store to put on their computer (free) and it came back catylatic converter bank one sensor 2 insuficant, so I took to a mechanic (not free, better computer) and same thing, but he could see the voltages on the o2 sensor and the bank one sensor 2 was not reading properly, sooo
in looking on youtube about this whole problem, Im seeing that a lot of people are saying that its the catylatic converter not the sensor? I don't mind trying a O2 sensor since they are not that expensive, but man if its one of the cats Im gonna be very upset, any thoughts?
Does the '05 have the four or the six cylinder engine? That will tell how many sensors are supposed to be there.
Post the EXACT fault codes, not some parts counter drone's interpretation of them.
Diagnosing a faulty converter, especially on a newly acquired vehicle, can be tricky since you don't know any of the history. Your worst case is that the previous owner already knew the converter was defective, so he/she reset the PCM to turn off the check engine light, then traded it in fast before it could come back on.
A mechanic with a scan tool who can look at the upstream/downstream switching ratios can tell definitively if a converter is good or bad, it isn't rocket science. I can do it with my smartphone, a $25 eBay adapter, and a $5 app.
