An idea that could possibly work...
OK. This is a camera that connects to a USB on a phone or tablet. It's goofy since it takes a 'wi fi' connection, but it seems to work,
My idea is to somehow mount this on some kind of rod that I could use to scan some of the product labels etc on the bottom shelves of stores -- especially grocery. The barcode/price labels are down there and even if I do manage to get that low, the visibility is seldom that good.
I don't know if this will work, but it does have built in lights and a magnifier -- and the images are very clear. What I need is an idea for a rod and some type of mount. I had thought that it could be telescoping, but the cable is quite stiff and that probably won't work. I'd also like to be able to quickly plop my phone on there. Finally, I don't want to make anybody think that I have some kind of weapon.

I looked at selfie sticks and they seem pretty hard to adapt. A cane might work, but I really don't know how I'd do it. You can see that the camera is around 3" long and the cable has to make a fairly gentle loop behind it. The camera also needs to be fixed so that it doesn't rotate - that makes the image rotate as well and there's no adjustment for that.
Any ideas appreciated.

Look at your cell phone. Cameras exist that are only 1/4" deep. You could put one on the end of a black cane with electrical tape and it would go mostly unnoticed.
You could also mount a bluetooth connection to your phone to examine the bar code, or install an app to interpret the code.
