95 f250 5.8 e40d. i'd like to know if my truck shifts normally. when i accelerate gradually my shifts are smooth and soft. when i have to accelerate fast from a standing start, the first shift feels punchy--more like a knock. is that typical? Thanks.

Not sure if its 'normal' but mine does the same thing with 460EFI.
Where is this part located? I have a very similar issue. I thought it was just the age so I haven't really chased after much but it's 50/50 whether the truck has a real smooth shift or jerks real hard into 2nd.
My 94 does the opposite. Quick acceleration is fine , slow ,it will give a hard shift into two with almost a bang. Only happens a real hot day. Today , it is 80 degrees F, 31c in southern Ontario. My truck is sitting until it cools down again this weekend.
I recommend you remove your glove box (no tools required, just thumbs, behind the glove box) and remove the Rear ABS control box. Just unplug it really. Then drive and see if it's better.
In my case, I also got a bit of a change after changing the VSS in the rear diff. Buy the harness too if you're brone to breaking fragile things like I am. Now I shift smoothly but I have no anti-lock brakes. I'm okay with that.

Thank you! I will try that out when I get a chance. I'm alright with no abs because I've still locked them up on a clean and dry road. I'm use to no abs so shouldn't be much an adjustment for me. Anyone have any ideas why the abs could be tied into this problem? Just curious. I've seen this happen on a lot of fords.
The signal from the sensor runs through the RABS module. Photo liberated from a rla post
A weak signal to the PCM could cause problems with how the transmission is shifted.
Interesting. Had some questions.
1. Will the ABS light come on? Assuming so but I'm not familiar with RABS and only have messed with newer systems.
2. Do I need to plug it back in or if it fixes my issue to just leave it unplugged?
3. Will it cause anything else not to work or just the RABS? I can live without antilock because mines been useless but I want to know if I'll notice any difference.
MLPS did not fix my rough shift into 2nd if that's what you're saying. I'd have to look back at my E4OD thread but I'm almost certain Mark said a bad MLPS could cause rough shifting. Still having this issue off and on but RABS will be unplugged today to see what happens.
