Compare the 4.2 V6 to the inline 4.9 please

I am accustomed to the inline 6 and love it because I drive to very high mileage before replacing. 250 to 350 thousand miles.

Now I'm going to upgrade and am looking at a 1999 with a 4.2. I know nothing about this engine. Tell me what you know. Will it go to those high miles like my inline 6? And anything else I should know?

Thanks, Al.

The 4.2 is completely different from the 4.9. The 4.9 was designed decades ago as a heavy duty / industrial / commercial engine. The 4.2 is a Windstar minivan 3.8L V-6 stroked to 4.2L. I have read here of many 4.2 owners who are happy with it, but it would not be my first choice if I was shooting for high mileage durability. The 4.6 triton seems to be doing well in that regard.

The inline 6 will still be running circles around the 4.2. No comparison. 4.2 is a decent motor, but its not anywhere near as bullet proof as the 4.9.
