Engine Replacement - Remove Grill?

I will be replacing the engine in a '77 F250 4X4 and wanted to know if I can get it out/in by just removing the hood and radiator or do I need to remove the grill or front clip as well? The engine is a 351M/400 and it is a manual transmission (NP435). The replacement engine is the same as the engine coming out. It is fully dressed and I was hoping to leave it that way for the install.

I replaced the engine on my '88 Bronco years ago without removing the grill or front clip, but wasn't sure if this is feasible on these trucks. Any insight, experience or tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

You don't need to remove if your lift will go high enough, but they get pretty tippy up that high. I don't like lifting them that high with an engine hoist.

Agree with this. I removed the FE360 from my '73 without removing the grill and core support. I did remove the front wheels, and get the truck as low as possible though.

You can do it without removing the grill. I just raised it high enough and pushed the truck backwards. This truck had the same exact setup as yours (although the front clip on this truck is from a '79)

Thanks all! That's what I needed to know. I had a forklift when I did my Bronco so it wasn't too difficult, but this time I will be using an engine hoist. Planning to get after it this weekend...

I like that idea. When that heffa is way up in the air to clear a grill, that engine hoist will seem wobbly even on smooth concrete, almost like a 3 wheel engine stand loaded.
