Hello all my son has a 86 f250 6.9 diesel extended cab 4 speed, he installed a 5 speed transmission from a 92 f250 7.3 diesel. transmission works great but only problem is how to hookup speedometer cable or is it possible?
1992 and up trucks use an electronic speedometer/odometer, there is no drive gear on the output shaft.
No easy way around this one that I know of short of disassembling the new transmission to swap output shaft and tail piece with an older 5 speed trans.
Assuming it was original to the '92, the rear case housing part number was the same between electronic and mechanical speedometers. It may even have a speedometer gear in it already, with the cable socket plugged. The first 7.3 transmission to show a spacer instead of a gear was in '94.5 with what I assume is the first powerstroke. I attached some PDFs that show what I'm talking about.
Is this a RWD or 4WD trans? If 4WD the cable connects to the transfer case. If RWD there is usually a blanked off hole in the tailshaft housing. No idea if there's a actually a gear inside the hole, but it's easy enough to check if you find the hole.
You would have to remove the output yoke to find out. If you do that, be sure to torque the nut to spec when reinstalling. Does it look like it's a removable plug or is the aluminum just not drilled through? There's a note in the ZF documentation to use plug number F2UZ-7H183-A on 4x2 with electronic speedometer.
