A few months back my father was driving my 03 7.3 powerstroke f350 pulling scrap iron and half way to town it blew black smoke and died. havent looked at it since i got a donar pickup which is an 2000 f250 and it runs good. Ive been trying to figure out what happened to my engine. First tho i will say i bought the truck with problems was blowing bluish grey smoke and was missing a cylinder or 2 and they would sometimes fire. I checked injectors and did alot of testing and every thing came back fine ive replaced injectors nothing changed. used to pull some vehcles around and felt like it was loosing power the more i used it. it got to the point where i couldnt get it to break 4 low lose to get back into 2 high. then my dad used it for hauling the scrap iron. Now present day tried putting oil in it and tried starting and will not start. So my question is would a bad piston or rings be my culprit from ethe bluish grey smoke to the black smoke my dad got when it blew up. Thank you for reading this far i hope to figure this out soon.
Check the link that split rims posted but my first thought would be intercooler boots. At that many miles, and if they haven't been replaced, they will split open or come off one end or the other. Without them holding boost pressure, your turbo is basically not there. Although that is usually announced by a loud POP. If those are all good then I would take the tobes n boots off of the turbo up top and check that the wheel is still in solid. Freely spinning but not hitting the side of the casing etc. That would be at least a turbo rebuild. Not too bad of a fix if you know your way around the engine bay somewhat. But check the 7.3 forum. Those guys have a ton of info.
