I broke every leaf spring once and then once I broke a replacement I went with 4k springs. The flat spring is after driving the Alcan and I never had any water in my tanks while driving that trip. The 4k springs have a positive arch with all my tanks full still.
Pretty much. Looking at upgrading to 8k axles, disc brakes, and the Roadmaster Comfort Ride springs & shocks.
My take on what makes a boondocking trailer, in no particular order:
1. Trail clearance. Most travel trailers lack the clearance I need to get down Forest Service and BLM roads.
2. Tank capacity. 100 gallons of fresh water minimum. Better make sure the cross members are stout!
3. Power. PV and a good sized battery bank. An on-board generator is a bonus, but any generator will do.
4. Frame. It has to be strong to handle the stress of getting into the better locations.
A toy hauler usually satisfies all these criteria, except for #3.
I looked up ORV today. I really like some of the design features. The MTN 27TRX might be our next bumper pull trailer.
One of the big selling features for me was that it doesn't have any slides. They (slides) all seem to cause problems eventually and I didn't want anything happening while out in the middle of nowhere boondocking. The insulation, dual pane windows, suspension (CRE 3000 with shocks), quality tires (Goodyear G614 RST G rated), and frame were selling features for me.
Even on a Boondocker, I'd want slides. They just add so much room, especially on rainy can't get out days. I'd want them to be the crank in type of slides though, not the pull things apart to move type.
Boondocking with this as your morning long view.
Enjoying a cup coffee listening to birds and seeing wildlife off in the distance.
This guy just crossed the field 1/4 - 1/3 mile out there.
Doesn't make a difference what rig you have just getting out is half the battle.
