Clunk going in reverse when shifting multiple times

I have a 88 f-150 it’s got an aod. I never thought about this until I had a suspicion of overdrive not working from being told its rpm is too high for the setup. But it is making a clunk when put in reverse it only does it when I shift multiple times like going P R N D D 1 and back though again to check the fluid or making 3 point turns or something. It’s only reverse it does this.

Check your u-joints first.

No OD shift could be a roached band, OD servo out of case, or even misadjusted TV cable. Too tight is better than too loose.

Chock wheels and with truck off, verify you have all positions too. Easier with help.

I drove it, it has OD. But I need to figure out the clunk. I’ll mess with the U-Joint when I change the diff fluid.

Excess slop in the rear axle can do it as well. Worn spider gears, excessive ring to pinion clearance (i.e. backlash), etc. Every little bit of extra clearance adds up pretty quickly. Not uncommon on any old vehicle. If someone did swap in new gears perhaps the setup was not optimal.

I forgot about the issue until today when it started slamming into reverse when I was backing into a spot and correcting my terrible parking job. I shifted into reverse it didn’t clunk, shifted into D, then R, made a clunk repeated that and it clunked more. It’s U-joints are fine ones new the other I verified it’s good. I think it’s the transmission, not much I can do about it now it reverses fine but I’m more so curious as why it does that. My dads 05 Chevy with the 5 speed Alison did it, but not unless you did it like 20 times when we were messing with the lines on the backup camera.
I’ll record a video of the noise later.
I can feel it when it does it to.

I have a 94 e4od, brand new rebuilt rear end, clunks into reverse only when hot, sometimes really badly, super smooth when cold.
I have determined my issue is in the tranny, tail shaft or previous owner mucked with pressure to give firmer shifts in forward gears, but slams in reverse.
