Just made a trip from Texas to CO, pre-trip full on oil, 15w-40 motor craft, as I was about half way through smelt a heavy oil smell but figured it was from driving through the oil towns in Texas, got to CO and ran another pre trip before hooking to my trailer and hauling heavy back to Texas and was barley on dip stick. No oil leaking from underneath just burnt, 3k miles from last oil change and change it every 5. Has anyone else had this happen, in 50k miles I’ve owned this truck (7 months) never had an issue with motor craft burning, mobile one burnt cause i needed a lower temp for freezing temps back in December up north, so I switched back to motor craft.
I got away from Motorcraft oil as soon as my complimentary and maintenance warranty (was traveling a lot at the time to warrant said warranty) oil changes ran out on my '16. Doesn't burn any oil at all. 166k miles on it. I run full synthetic Rotella or Valvoline blue year round. I'm in Colorado as well.
I will say the very first oil change where I swapped over to fully synthetic, I was pissed at how much sludge I got out of the Motorcraft oil from my pan. Zero sludge since switching to fully synthetic.
Something is not right and unlikely just the type of oil used, so it needs a serious investigation before a possible engine failure. I run Rotella T6 5W-40 and at 130K+ on my 2016 I have yet to add *any* oil between my 7500 mile changes, nor has the dipstick reading ever been low when checking right before a 7500 mile change. Sudden oil consumption with no drips makes me think failed piston rings or turbo seals, neither of which should be neglected.
2023 F350 6.7l has 4,000 miles on it, checked the oil and it was at the bottom of the stick, added 2 qts. Has only towed a boat about 60 miles and has been treated like a baby since I’m currently recovering from surgeries. I have had several Ford Pickups both gas and diesel that range from zero to less than a quart between changes….I’m thinking I should be freaking out. I’ll probably keep a close eye on it for 10,000 miles for sure.
