Automatic Transmission Rebuild?

I completely rebuilt my 2000 model 7.3 engine late last year. Can’t say I did it myself because I had a lot of excellent advice from several really smart and generous people on this forum and it turned out great. It has about 6500 miles on it now. Thank you all again.
My next project is the automatic transmission. I have zero experience with automatics, but my oldest son was a factory trained tranny tech for a Chrysler dealership for a few years.
So I might be able to tap him for some general information.
My question is, do you guys think it would be wise to try and tackle this project myself. I’ve had some really unpleasant experiences with repair shops, and I prefer not to take it to one, if at all possible. Not a fan of off the shelf rebuilts either, which is the reason I built my own engine. I know what’s in it and that everything that should be done was done. I use this truck mostly to pull my 5th wheel camper so I can take all the time I need. But having no experience makes me a little nervous.

If it makes you feel better, I've rebuilt a lot of different automatics over the years (stock stuff as I don't do performance experiments) and will proclaim that the E4OD/4R100 is by far one of the easiest ones to do. One special tool required that can be made in-house with minimal headache and it's nuts and bolts other than one snap ring that can be a bear without the "proper" set of pliers.

It’s certainly possible. I’m a house painter by trade and rebuilt my E4OD with the help of the transmission bench YouTube series. I’ve got over 20k miles and going strong.
I strongly advise a new front pump and new torque converter. At least verify. They failed for me a few months after the install, so yeah- you get the picture
If you are mechanically inclined enough to rebuild anything then you can do this. The check ***** made me a little nervous but once the valve body gasket was off, mine were marked by a little scratch made into the steel. Good luck!

Thanks for the tips guys. I’ve decided to give it a shot. Sometimes my self-reliant confidence overloads my abilities. All I really needed was a little nudge. I keep thinking, what’s the worst that could happen? I might end up having to take it to a shop or buy a rebuilt off-the-shelf if I screw it up too bad. I’d much rather do it myself and know that all the parts that should be replaced and everything that should be done is done.
Thanks again for the responses and tips. Keep ‘em coming if you’ve got’em.
Probably won’t start for a couple weeks. Got some other stuff to get buttoned up first but I’ll keep y’all posted

Don’t be intimidated by the transmission as is very common with folks. They are fairly straightforward with some decent instructions, a little mechanical skill, and common sense.

I rebuilt mine using the ATSG (or something like that) book and this write up from another forum. 4R100 Rebuild Manual for the DIY | PowerStrokeArmy

The write up details the special tools you have to make (dad made mine while I worked on other things).

I would also purchase a decent torque converter and a new trans cooler (6.0 version).

Main things to remember is to keep it clean (valve body contamination is bad), sealing surfaces need to remain scratch free, check your pack clearances, check endplay when called out, and be sure the snap rings are fully seated.

Good luck!
