Bad Steering Gear?

Hi All,

2007 F250 V10 4x4

I've got some bad memory steer going on. The steering wheel does not self center. It takes a lot of attention to keep this thing going straight down the road. Drove 900 miles towing a trailer and it was a brutal experience. Power steering still works (can easily turn the wheels when engine on and truck stopped).
  • Checked the balljoints and no binding. They move back and forth easily (wheels off and tie rod disconnected).
  • Brakes are releasing. No drag, can turn hub by hand
  • U joints greased frequently all move freely. Checked them in various positions (3/6/9/12 o'clock)
  • Power steering fluid level good
  • Pump sounds good, no whine
  • Removed steering damper, no change
What I did notice is with the drag link removed from the steering box (nothing attached to the pitman arm) it takes a lot of effort to turn the wheel with the engine off. Both arms, feels like I'm trying to dry steer the wheels.

Is this a bad steering gear? How much effort should it take to turn the steering wheel with nothing attached to the pitman arm? I'm assuming very little? I just want some feedback before I throw $400 towards a replacement.

Thanks,

Yes, with the engine running it's easy.

Then I'm still suspecting an alignment problem such as toe out or too little caster. Or maybe a severely worn track bar joint.
