1989 E150 4.9 code 41

I have this code on my 1989 E150 4.9. Says no HO2S switching detected. Engine idles smoothly. Comes on after about 15 minutes of idling. (I use van mainly for newspaper deliveries in town other local errands, with occasional out of town highway driving) When I shut it off and restart, the check engine light stays off for about 10 min, before coming back on.

I took it on a 50 mile round trip on the interstate @ 65 mph and the light never came on. Should I replace sensor? I saw no damaged wiring

The heater wire may just be burned out in the sensor. The code stays off at highspeed because the exhaust manages to get the sensor hot enough without the heating element.

At least, that's my take on it.
It's only a $20 sensor. I'd go ahead and replace it.

That's kinda what I was thinking, the heating part isn't working at the lower speeds. I can get one for $30, is easy to get to

Spend a bit more and get a new Motorcraft one (ebay new old stock)
Yes, bitchy to get out on a 89
Use the special socket or cut the connector off and use a box end 7/8 wrench
Good luck

I just looked back and I paid $36.60 form RA on closeout in July 2020. Today they want $62 plus shipping.
DY-605, FO3Z9F472A fits your van Jeff. if you can find a Motorcraft, for 30, grab it! RockA shows the orignal 1989 number to be E93F9F472AA

The black O2 sensor wire was completely broken in two. Replaced sensor and now check engine light is out. My gas mileage should improve now that the sensor is working as it should

^^^ Thanks for updating us---might be helpful to others in the future!

How difficult was it to remove the defective sensor?
