But you also can program it to turn off the auto regen thus allowing those further out regens.

It just does not make sense to regen with 0% soot @ 496 just because.

No, the 20+ trucks will still trigger a regen at every 500 miles, no matter if the DPF (on the truck) is reading 0% or 100%. But, we can also turn the auto regen off and until we turn it back on, the truck will not go into a regen, no matter how many miles it's been, or what the DPF% screen reads. This is why I can begin a regen even at 90%. My 22 goes 575+ miles before getting to 100%, even with all city driving. By the time I am at 90% I am already at the 500 mile trigger. So, once I hit 90% I plan a longer highway drive to allow the regen to complete down to 0%, then I just turn the auto regen back on, and it starts.

I will say that when towing, I have gotten to where I will keep auto regen turned off until I am almost down with the trip. Then, about 50 miles before finishing, I will turn the auto regen back on, even though I am at 0% and will let the truck complete a regen. I don't know if it hurts or if it helps, but I also feel like it makes the truck happier knowing it's done... and it typically doesn't really drop the mpg when towing... But, it does seem like it really get's it clean because after driving around 1000+ mile at 0% from passive regens and then doing an active regen, well, it takes quite a while before the DPF% starts climbing again!

Today, first leg of the trip. Soot hit full, iDash 43%. I was going to hold off unitl it read 50%, but the engine seemed to sputter under acceleration. Made a really odd sound. SO I activated regen, and unlike my usual regens where teh iDash reads on-ACT-ON-ACT until completed, it just said on. I guess there was enough load on the engien that very little extra fuel was needed. It got down to 0% with 20% still on iDash, and finally turned off at 5%. I then turned it off and will see how this one goes. Once the regen completed the exhaust was back to sounding normal. Weird, but true.

That's interesting. Mine has always flashed ON-ACT-ON-ACT-ON, etc... whether towing or not.

I have had both notifications. Not sure why that is but it is accurate.

I quit monitoring the soot % on the idash and monitor it on the truck display instead. I only monitor it during the regen process.

I have 3 screens set up on mine... But I just use the red screen set up for active regens and the blue daily driver one. The active regen screen and the green colored screen which I usually don't use flash ACT ON but the daily driver screen just says ON... it is weird.

It might coincide with the amount of fuel being injected determined by engine load. While cruising at 60 MPG during a regen, the engine doesn't use enough fuel to warrant a steady fuel flow through the back pistons, so its like an on/off designation, and while towing, since the engine is burning much more fuel, it can remain flowing constantly, so shows as on.
