Steering coupler question

I ordered a Lares 202 steering coupler from Rockauto. Comparing it to the one on my truck, it is different. The 2 studs on the original are WAY larger than the ones on the replacement. Also, the new one has 2 different diameter studs. This is on an F100 with manual steering. Is there a different rag joint for this? The new one looks like it would introduce a lot of chance for slack or even breakage. That new one is the only one Rockauto listed.

This is on an 1971 F100 2WD with manual steering. Is there a different rag joint for this?
There's only one for this ^>
C9UZ-3A525-A (replaced C9TZ-3A525-B & D3TZ-3A525-A) .. Steering Coupler (rag joint) / Obsolete

1969/74 F100/250 2WD & F350 with Manual & Power Steering // 1975 F100/250 2WD & F350 with Manual Steering only.

No Ford dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any // Available from Dorman Products sold by auto parts stores.

Lares might have their application wrong, aftermarket suppliers often do. Going from memory, 67/68 used the coupler with two different sized studs. 69 and later used two studs the same size. C&G Ford parts seems to indicate that as well.

The link is for reference - unfortunately they appear to be out of stock.

1966 F100/250 2WD from serial number 900,001, 1967/68 F100/250 2WD & F350 use the same steering coupler (C6TZ-3A525-A) with two different sized pins.

The larger pin is .56" O.D.

Bought a Dorman 31004 as it is the replacement to the one numberdummy listed. I measured mine as well as I could while in the truck. The Dorman seems to be very close. I will find out when I get the time to work on it.

I have researched this extensively I am sad to hear that the Lars has different size bolts , because I thought I found a photo of that model 202 or what ever that showed it to be both the same size !!!
I am thrilled to learn that 69's have the same size bolts . I hope that is true because my OCD self wants 2 bolts the same size very badly
I cannot understand why on God's green earth would they be different sizes
That just annoys me so terribly , its like they were just stupid or what , just make them the same size ...........ha
NOW if anyone knows where to find a 69 with the same size bolts rag joint would u tell me....... I do hope they are the size that MR. Number Dummy quoted as the larger size ( .59 or so) . i just think bigger would be better in this case as steering is very important..........
The service manual actually has a proper measurement to install the joint............

I never said any such thing. The only size I listed was for the 1966/68 steering coupler. See post #4.

Installed the Dorman 31004 today. Everything went together fine. Studs are 9/16". Disc is 3 1/4". Bolts lined up. I don't remember what post I read from an older string, but one guy stated it was a 20 minute job. I wish he had been here to do mine. About a 2 hour job for me. But all is in and working now. Used the part number posted by Numberdummy to cross it to the Dorman 31004. If you look on the Dorman site, that one will not work on a '71 F100. It does work. I compared by measurements and then by a side by side comparison to the one I took out. Now on to the next item to fix. There are soooooooo many.

I even called Dorman a couple years ago & was told they do not make a coupler 4 a 1971 F100
So anyway...Are your studs both 9/16" I do hope so..........ha
It puzzles me as to why they made so many with different size studs.............some smart engineer must have a reason or was hungover when he made the calculations....... ha.......THANX muchly

Yes. Both studs are 9/16". The whole assembly is nearly identical to the original. The main difference I found is that the clamp is grooved all the way top to bottom and it uses a hex head bolt on the clamp. But it gets rid of that pesky 12 point bolt that comes on it. Took me a while to figure out why my 6 point socket wouldn't work.
