I have a 1987 F250 6.9 with a manual transmission. When I accelerate while going uphill in second gear (ie higher rpm), the truck stalls. It will crank again after a few tries of 15 seconds at a time. The last time this happened (tonight) I switched from the front to the rear tank. I got it started and it ran rough for a few seconds then cleared up. I suspect that the front tank has a bad dip tube that sucks air on an incline when it isn't absolutely full. I'll try to get it to stall on the rear tank tomorrow to test out that theory (although i suppose the rear tan could also have a bad dip tube). I have already installed a new electric fuel pump and return line kit. Does anyone have any suggestions? Do I seem to be on the right track (sucking air from bad dip tube)? Do I need to pull the tank to fix it?
On the end of the pick up tube is a plastic piece that has a screen on the bottom
suction part. It sits on the bottom of the tank. They tend to deteriorate after x # of
years and come apart in pieces. Then the suction tube is about 3+ inches above
the tank bottom. That is why you start sucking air with the fuel sloshing back and
forth some where around 1/4 tank.
When I bought my 86 it was 28 yrs old in 9/14. I had the truck about 4 years and
swapped in the rear 38 gallon tank. I pulled the bed to do the job. Installed 2 new senders
and Shower heads. Both of mine were in couple pieces in the bottom of the tank.
For me I would pull the bed instead of laying on my back with dirt falling on me and
dealing with a tank with fuel in it. Plus I wanted to inspect things and wash up the
frame etc...
I have pulled the bed 3 times so far, getting good at it.
