5th wheel stabilizers

Looking at adding some stabilizers to my 5th wheel that has the Lippert Control 3.0 with 4 electric legs.

Seems like Jake's Strong Arm and the SteadyFast are the gotos. I'm leaning towards SteadyFast. Anyone have strong opinions here or any thing to watch out for?

I currently use only X Chocks that I used to use with my old TT.

We have been using Steady Fast for many years now and I would recommend them to a friend. We will never NOT have them again.

Another stabilizer to look into if you have folding steps is Lippert Solid Stance RV Step Stabilizer. It is cheap and folds up nicely when not in use.

I installed the JT Strong Arms on my 3660SUITE but the trailer still wiggled, then I forgot to release them when breaking down camp and bent the hell out of the main bracket. I think the best solution is something at the very back of the trailer to prevent the wiggle walk. Just remember to loosen them regardless which you install before you run the jacks.

They worked excellent on our bumper pull, but not so well with the 5th wheel and I think that has a lot to do with where the jacks are positioned and less with their stability because the jacks aren't moving, the trailer is. Anything forward or rearward of the jacks move the trailer, between the jacks, solid. If the jacks were at the very back on mine, it would make a huge improvement.

Not sure about JT Strongarm, but the Steady Fast kit I have has three stabilizer bars. Two for the front and one for the rear. One runs with the frame and the other two are across the width of the trailer.

We have a checklist that we run EVERY time the trailer is being moved. Loosen the stabilizer clamps is on that list.

The JT has 6 arms. two for each front leg, and two for the rear jacks. The issue with the rear ones is if you don't have a crossmember to attach them to, you can't use them, which may be why mine aren't reducing the wiggle walk.

My biggest fear is that I will forget to loosen the stabilizer when I leave. I would love to figure out a way that would prevent me from my stupidity.

I too have the folding support under the stairs. I like it.

I have the JT Strongarm stabilizers on my travel trailer toy hauler. It made a HUGE difference. My wife gave her blessing on that purchase.

On a fifth wheel, I'm not sure. But I don't see how it couldn't help some.

What is the logic for placing the rear legs so close to the rear axle? There's a lot of trailer behind those rear legs.

Have you tried a large stack of lego blocks? I have the 6 point system and still use about 6 blocks per leg, the shorter the less wobble.

Yep. I use the Lego blocks, but there’s still a lot of side to side wiggle especially with the 4 point leveling system.

thanks for all the info. I found a little more info of strong arms vs steady fast - the strong arms in the rear are front to back. The steady fast is side to side.

this solidifies the steadyfast for me since the side to side wiggle is the major problem. The front brace and my x chocks will be enough for any front to back motion.

Thats not how my instructions read. The swing bolt that attaches to the jack is fore-aft, but the tube is mounted center to jack. Thats why mine hasn't been in stalled, there is nothing between the frame rails to mount to. I would have to add a piece of either U-channel or angle in order to mount the tubes.

I’ll have to download the k steuctions. I don’t have scissor jacks in the rear and this is what I’ve seen install-wise for the StrongArms (pics in thread)

Question for you guys. Do you use these with 6 point auto leveling? Or, it this something to help with standard jacks?

Our 5th wheel has the two landing gear legs in the front and two scissor jacks in the rear. I bought two extra Steady Fast bigfoot feet to have all four match and have a wider footprint at each contact point. As mentioned before, there are three stabilizer legs and three large wing nut style hand turns.

The stabilizers are on our checklist, which we ALWAYS run through before moving the camper.

There is still a bit of movement because the trailer is sitting on the tires, but 90% of the "wiggle" was removed with the Steady Fast stabilizers and the step stabilizer by Lippert.

I wanted something that was as automatic as possible and provided the most value for the cost. In my humble opinion, having three long bars is better than more short bars due to the leverage and anchoring mechanics involved. The hand clamps take literally one second each to tighten or loosen and I am off to the next task.

Again, we will never NOT have the Steady Fast and Lippert step stabilizer on our trailers. I will remove these and install them on the next, just like I did when I removed the Steady Fast from our last 5th wheel and installed them on this one.

I hope this helps.

Reason they didn't work as expected on my 5th wheel is due to placement of the rear jacks. They are right behind the tires and the overhang is a good 12 feet behind them so any movement at the back is transmitted up front even with the jacks locked in. I don't even bother with the clamps anymore since they don't help. I would have been better off putting scissors jacks on the rear bumper to stop the sway. Wouldn't have mattered which brand either.
