330FT rebuild question

I have a 78 f350 dump truck. It used to be a uhaul truck with the 330Ft motor. I'm leaning towards just rebuilding the 330 due to the fact I just put new exhaust manifolds on and built a full exhaust for this motor. It has the np435 transmission. Is there a cam or anything available to upgrade the performance of the this motor. I am not opposed to swapping motors if there is anything that would bolt to the transmission with the larger clutch. It currently uses the side motor mounts and not the timing cover mount like the larger trucks.

Try this thread. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/6...-fe-or-ft.html

I'd say start over with a 390 if you can find a cheap one, but I don't think it will work with your trans.

FE performance parts should work, but if it was mine, I'd just get it running good and save my $ for 390.

I just found a complete 391ft in unknown condition for $100. I have always been a chevy guy and know nothing about fords but from what I have found lately there is not much available for the FT engines as far as performance parts. I probably will look for an fe based replacement. Thanks

The 391 crankshaft apparently has some value, but I'd still pass on it and wait for an FE if you have any thoughts of performance upgrades.

Some good info here - https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/6...d-a-391-a.html

For an occasional use truck it's getting me by. I'm just thinking long term something I can do for more power or low end torque. I think I will wait and look for an fe motor that I can get performance parts for if need be.

Keep your eyes peeled for an inexpensive 390, but they're not nearly as plentiful and cheap as they used to be.

There are two different 330 2V FT engines: Medium Duty that uses the 352/360 crank and a Heavy Duty that used the 361 FT crank.

1973/78 F350 U-Hauls used the 330 2V Medium Duty engine.

FT engines are meant to take a lot of abuse that regular FE engines are not meant for. Wide open throttle for miles on end no matter the temperature. A reason for low compression. If it's getting the job done for you I would stick with what you have.

Does anyone know if the 391 would bolt right in like the 330 as far as exhaust manifolds clutch and bell housing.

Or does anyone know what parts are interchangeable between them. For $100 for the 391 I wouldn't care if I ended up not swapping them if any of the parts could be used for the 330 like the intake or manifolds or heads

If you decide to keep the 330 or switch to the 391 engine it's best to aim at a stock rebuild because there are very few aftermarket HP offerings. The regular FEs (360 and 390) on the other hand have a very healthy HP aftermarket because they are so similar to the 427/428s which are also FE engines.
