I’m in the process of building a 3.8V6 for my 1984 pickup. Can anyone tell me what the original distributor shaft size is for the 3.8V6?? I can’t seem to find any info online. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Welcome to FTE.
Well you picked an add ball motor for a pickup truck as I have not see to many people say they have that motor in their truck.
You many want to ask that same question in here under your motor size. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum184/
Now if you had the 4.9 straight six you would have more luck as there were a lot more of them in our trucks.
May I ask why you need to know the size for as we may be able to come up with something.
Good luck

Thanks for the reply! I need to know the size because I was told that the original distributor for my engine would have had a 1/4” shaft, but everything I find online is a 5/16” shaft. I should mention I am looking to find a aftermarket distributor with a one wire hookup. Would it be possible to just buy the distributor with the 5/16” shaft and swap the shaft out to a 1/4”? The pickup I’m restoring was my grandfather’s and originally came with a 3.8V6, that’s why I wanted to use the 3.8 and not go with something more popular.
The only Ford trucks to use the 3.8L V6 were 1982/83 F100's. This engine was a troublesome POS, Ford techs called it the miracle engine.
If the valve covers didn't seep before 20,000 miles, if the timing cover didn't crack before 30,000 miles, if the head gaskets didn't blow before 40,000 miles, it was a miracle!

You should have the duraspark II ignition system. It's a good system, keep what you have. Only the very popular and common engines have the one wire HEI conversion distributors.

It sounds like you are talking about the oil pump drive?
What is wrong with the factory dist. or you dont have one?
Also guessing you are reading the size from web sites and dont have one in your hands to check?
I would get 1 in hand to see what it comes with and then check the oil pump.
