I started thinking that I have that core still somewhere. Then I also have the one I made into a priming tool somewhere. Sonds like I need to head out o the shop and do some pilfering.
I thought for sure as common as changing dizzy gears for different cam applications someone would know right off hand.
I don't know what the right size is but I do have a word of caution. The distributor shaft will have a couple steps in it so you need to remove the drive gear to get the right measurement. If you measure the shaft right below the gear you will buy the wrong gear.. been there and done that.
I didn't know changing dist gears was that common. Most Ford camshafts use a cast iron gear and don't need the gear changed. Most aftermarket's are the same. Only some billet cams need the steel gear, and maybe a few Ford roller cams. I had a engine guy tell me even some of the Ford roller cams still had a cast iron gear installed on them.
I have a roller cam that was custom ground. The steel gear was recommended for it. I don't know if I can get away with the cast iron or not, but would rather just change it to be safe.
I am about to buy a new DSII dizzy and then try to change the gear.
Did you find the shaft size? I didn't make it to the shop today so didn't look, but if I'm better tomorrow I'll check for a W...... hang on, a text came in. Wouldn't you know it, some guy asking about a part # for a blue-grommeted ignition module. Back in a bit....
And the answer, in case Bruno needs to refer back to this instead of his text messages, comes from Bubba's site re the Mighty M:
77-'82 351M/400 truck Blue grommet Ford service # D9VZ-12A199-A Motorcraft service # DY-184C
'77-82 351M/400 truck Blue grommet Ford service # F2PZ-12A199-AA Motorcraft service # Update replacement DY-683 Update for DY-184C.
I was trying to cross the part number for a Standard Motor Products ignition module on Summits site. When I got close to narrowing it down all the sudden I was asked what Ford part number it was originally and was given about 30 different OEM numbers that had about 8 characters each in them. Turns out they all crossed to the same LX203 number for Standard. Then I took the part number and searched Amazon for it since I get free 2 day shipping with my Prime membership(also they seem to beat Summit's prices, but they don't have a search application for vehicles) that I cant use to watch movies with because my smart blue ray doesn't offer Amazon and doesn't have any software upgrades available.
Shaft diameter 351w duraspark ll dist: 17/32", or 13.35mm, or .525". Oh and FYI, you can measure shaft diameter without touching the gear, it's the same as the portion above the gear. I measured both, they were identical.
