My Starter Saga Continues

Last week I chronicled my starter problem. In a nutshell, I went to get fuel, got fuel, started truck, turned truck off and removed key and the starter continued to run without the key in or the ignition turned on. I took my starter out and had it tested. it tested okay. I tested to make sure I was getting power at the permanent hot at the starter before replacing, it tested hot. I had my wife turn the key and the ignition wire was hot at the starter while the key was turned to the start position. I reinstalled the starter, and now nothing. No power at all on the permanent hot lead. What gives? Here's the caveat, my 16 year old took out the starter, when he took it out, he removed an additional bolt from somewhere that is about 4" long and only threaded on the end. I can't find where it goes. I can't imagine this would create a no power situation to the permanent hot, but what do I know? Right now I'm going to remove the permanent hot and ignition wire from the starter and test again. Thanks for any insight. Ford F250 6.0 2003 4x4 Superduty

Where is your ground hooked up when testing? Is it possible the bolt removed was holding a block ground?

Not sure yet, I thought about that. If I ran a jumper from the negative on the battery to the mounting bolt on the starter and still get 0 volts would that eliminate that, right?

You can hook jumper cables from battery negative to the engine block.

When testing it is always better to go to the battery, and test your meter, or test light before beginning diagnostics.
so jumper from b+, test to starter case. Jumper from b- test starter powers.

I did check the battery terminals. They are good. Update, and my apologies, I am getting hot to the starter from the always hot cable, but not from the ignition when the key is turned. When the starter was off yesterday, i had power to the solenoid wire when the igintion was turned and today with it reinstalled, nothing.

That makes more sense.
I don't have a 6.0 so can't help too much with specifics.
I would start with the fuse, then swap relays. blower relay might be a good one to swap in. Also might want to test for power, ground, control at the relay. Not sure what is switched from what on your truck.
If you are having problems finding that I will see if I can find a diagram somewhere.

Thanks for the help. Generally, I can find my way around repairs. I've rebuilt engines, replaced a flywheel on a front wheel drive car, but this one stumps me. Electrical is a funny beast, I can't help b ut think its the solenoid/starter still. Thanks, Jason
