Have an unknown year 300 (used to be injected) in an old beater 85 4x4 with electronic ignition and a wiring system from heck. This is a fence row truck that has came back out of the row.
Tired of ignition issues. Burning up control boxes etc.
Won't an older 300 point distributor fit right in if I remember correctly? Been a long time since I've wrenched 240 and 300's.
Want to ask before I search out a point distributor.
Steve
Yes, figured that out yesterday as no answers to the question and I plowed ahead getting it done, after spending 4 hours getting the point distributor freed up from the 6cyl in an old 64.
Calipers confirmed the fit so then I wire brushed the corrosion from the 0-ring groove and installed it.
Hit the switch and 1-2 seconds it fired and idled.
I wonder if not running a resister with the electronic setup was why you were burning them up?

I put in a resistor after the first box smoked.
They had a toggle switch for ignition, and a push button for the starter. Wires running all over h3ll so I pulled all that crap and put in a universal key switch and ran new wires to the box.....thus realizing I had no resistor wire in the shop and not wanting to run to town, so I had an extra resistor for my 860 tractor and used it.
Then the factory coil smoked later on, taking out the box yet again.
Then I believe the distributor pickup shorted, taking out the box a third time. Not sure on that, so I just pulled it all off and went with a old style point system.
This all over a couple of years. Sometime during all that it smoked the resistor also.
