302 Roller Block Generation Changes

Hi Folks,

I'm trying to document some information on my truck and I'm missing some information on my block. I started with a 5.0 from a 1996 F150 2wd pickup. I later bought a completely rebuilt long block locally. Due to Covid delays and issues at the time, it was easier and much quicker than having my 1996 block rebuilt. Anyway...it IS a roller block obviously as I swapped the 1996 F4TE cam into it and bolted on the 1996 E7TE heads and it is running great. The long block I purchased came with what was supposedly a 1988-1989 Mustang oil pan and oil pump, etc. I swapped these parts out for my truck stuff.

Anyway, I thought the block had an "E8xx" casting in it, but I can't remember for sure and I didn't write it down.

Were the roller blocks the same from the mid 1980's until they stopped using them in 1996 (or later on in the Explorers, 2001?).
Or were there changes in them over the years...just curious so I can update my files.

Yes they were functionally the same to the end of production, the big change to be roller ready happened in '87 after that I'm not sure what the revisions included. There were some roller blocks built before '87 too but I believe they were exclusive to the Mustang line.

Thanks Conanski, that's what I thought but wanted to ask just in case. I'm just trying to document as much as possible so that a future owner will know what is under the hood. I assumed that a 1987-1993 Foxbody 5.0 block would basically be the same as a 1996 F150 5.0 block, but you never know...there could have been a change that I wasn't aware of.

I did buy a bunch of small block Ford books a few years ago but I loaned them to a friend of mine. They have some great info in them, but I don't have them currently to research.

Thanks Conanski!

That sounds right on the blocks. There were flat tappet engines built using the roller blocks but as far as I know, unlike Chevrolet, all of them had the machining to work with the roller lifters.

FWIW: My October '85 built F150 5.0 EFI (1986 Model) came with a roller ready block. E6SE if I'm not mistaken. It is sitting in the corner of my garage waiting for a possible rebuild.
