Hi,
I have a f250, 2005.
Recently I had a problem starting it with the key so I tried starting it with the cable at the passenger side. That worked a few times, motor started and running. But suddenly it didnt work. It wont turn over and seems stuck?! It just clicks but nothing more, motor will not turn over. Have removed the starter and tested it and it works. So what should I check now? Thanks in advance.
You might have a solenoid contact disc that is not making consistent contact, bridging the two posts that supply power to the actual starter motor. His happens, has happened to me, and you can temporarily get around the problem to get home by tapping the starter with a hammer or moderately heavy tool. When it is doing this, its not uncommon to it to work on and off, and when removing the starter, you've jostled it around enough for it to work. But not permanently. You can buy solenoids and just replace that part, or get another starter. I'll just warn, auto parts stores starters are not great. Of the bunch, NAPA starters are a little better than the others. But there are new starters from well known brands like Mahle that are good, the Motorcraft are not without fault but generally good. Me, I bought a 6.4L starter that was salvaged, making sure it was low miles and had the OE sticker on it.
