I read somewhere

I believe it was probably at this site, something about the exhaust being to close to the starter motor possibly causing the starter motor to be burned out. is this true?
I have a 239 in my '50 F-1 and the clearance between the exhaust and the starter motor is about 3".

The exhaust being in proximity of the starter could lead to heat soaking the starter. In some cases, the heat on the starter can breakdown/melt insulation and other components. However, Ford is usually pretty spot on with their engineering and with a proper functioning stock setup, this shouldn't be a concern. If ones starter is getting too hot from the exhaust, one should address the root cause which is usually an AFR issue due to mixture settings, base timing, advanced timing, old/poor quality fuel, and so on, or excessive cranking.

but you can also add a heat shield or insulating wrap to the starter or exhaust while you're digging for the root cause

If you have 3" of clearance between your starter and the exhaust pipe running near it, you shouldn't have any heat soak issues. That's plenty of room for air to circulate around everything. The guys that have issues are typically those that have the pipe running right next to the starter, like less than an inch, and it's usually guys with headers with 4 tubes running next to the starter, not just one.

In the towing forum above there is a post on no start after pulling the trailer and stopping of gas.
All the trucks are newer trucks 2019 IIRC and the fix that I seen was replace the factory starter.
So Ford either messed up and put the exh too close or they got a sh** load of bad starters.

@FuzzFace2 , you are in the 48-56 truck Forum here. The Ford engineering mindset of the time does not really resemble Ford of today.

I've never heard of flat-V8's overheating the starters.
