I've got a 79 Bronco where we replaced the tailgate but kept the guts of the original...lubricated everything up well and cleaned it up and then installed it in the new gate. It works but not very well, the motor seems underpowered to handle the window. I'm sure I read a post on here at some point about replacing the motor with something more powerful (might even have been a Chevy part or something?) but I can't find it for the life of me. Anyone have any advice on this? My experience is that even new the stock motors on these suck so I'd prefer to just go bigger and not have to mess with it anymore, its a huge pain

thanks gang!
The factory window motor worked fine, no one ever complained about, but...
The motor contains a plastic drive gear that is noted for stripping. It's available NOS and from auto parts stores.
D0AZ-62234A24-B .. Power Window Regulator Drive Plastic Gear Kit - Fits almost everything, excepting some Lincolns from 1970 into the 1990's.
Auto parts stores will be cheaper than buying this puppy from a Ford obsolete parts vendor:
NOS PARTS LTD in Waxahachie TX has 3 = 972-937-2201.
LINCOLN/MERCURY OLD PARTS STORE in Clearwater FL has 24 = 727-445-7551
Note: 1969 and earlier is not the same!
The 1978/79 Bronco Tailgate Motor (D8TZ-9823394-A) did not fit anything else, it was only used on 1978/79 Bronco's.
thanks for the info but the words 'plastic' and 'gear' just don't work for me, I don't wanna replace a cheap POS with more cheap POS and have to do this again in 3-4 years.
No, the thread I'm recalling it was a completely different motor used, much better built, slightly more power, took a little fine tuning and a little bit of fabrication to mount it as I recall but it worked perfectly when installed.
if you look on Rock auto they have 2 different motors listed or pictured. you want the one that is physically larger. I had this discussion with a friend and he agreed to go with the larger one. hope this helps
You get those tracks lubed up with the special stuff and it should work like a greased pig
The factory motor (tailgate motor for a Bronco) is a high torque, and we used to put those in our car windows for fun (Big honkin Lincolns and such)
The special; stuff is just thick silicone that stays put for a while (Ford mini vent lube)
Part of a 30 k service is to lube all the window tracks with this stuff
Mine always worked great but if you want those plastic rollers are in there so they crack and break if someone gets there head or hand between window and frame ,you can replace them with a small nut in thinking 1/4 " but its been a while . also check your voltage and ground
Damn doonsberry, that glass moves! I restored my back glass in my 78. New motor, new plastic sliders on the channel, greased etc... The glass moves fine when the tailgate is down ( I hotwired that part of the wiring). When the tailgate is up, the glass moves very slowly, sometimes requiring a helping hand. I don't know if some of the wires are compromised where they bend, or a bad ground, or the up/down glass track isn't adjusted properly.
