Hey I have a 2000 Excursion with a v10 and 225k miles. I can’t get it down into first gear. It’s like the linkage is out of adjustment but everything appears fine. Maybe a stretched cable? I would really like that 1st gear low range for coming down these mountain trails. Thanks in advance everyone! Let’s keep ‘em on the road!
Might be easy to disconnect the cable from the bottom of the column and see if you can shift it
That way you will be inspecting the shift tube / lever for being loose as well
If real tight, the cable is frayed
Pretty common on high mile trucks and vans
Getting harder to find a Ford cable these days

Thanks, I’m pretty familiar with the steering column shifter linkage problems on these years of trucks and everything looks good and tight in the column.. it feels like it just can’t quite pull the cable enough to drop it into first..
That means your cable is most likely frayed
Disconnect both ends of the cable
See if there is looseness in the cable and being tight at both ends of travel
