Yep mud truck...and now I can see the front spring (front) drop brackets. What size are the tires 38.5 or 40's? And I bet those are 16.5 Bart rims? If you are going to beat on it, take the race trac trim off the fender and door. They can be flip sold for some $.
The cheaper route is a Skyjacker 6" all spring and a 3" body lift if you are just mudding it. Or just uncluster F the back end (spring stack circus) and wheel it. B&M shifter handle, tack, Grant GT steering wheel and a little tree freshener. Rock'n.
Yeah it’s pretty sweet , I remember seeing it online before I bought it and I knew I had to have it. Tires are 38.5/15/16.5, don’t know what I’m going to do about the wheels because it’s going to be hard finding a size for those. I plan on it being my wheeling rig, the guy I bought it from used it as a mud truck, I’m goin to use it as more of a rock crawler, definitely will take it through some snow as well. I’d like to just use a spring lift but I’m open to other options if it’s better or cheaper. And I didn’t know that trim was that desirable.
I just need to get it going, motor threw a rod but I bought another 390 from the seller so I’m going to take all the good parts off the old one and put them on the good motor. I bought a complete reseal kit from jegs for 80$ so that should be here shortly, then I’ll get to work.
Yes 16.5's are hard to find in the 1st place and $$ when you get to trying to buy some. I have 38.5x14.50x16.5 on my red truck (now) with a 6" Skyjacker (all 4 spring lift). And you DO reuse the OEM rear block.
Military take offs only get you 37x12.50x16.5 at the most. If you are going to use it as a crawler you better definitely ditch that rear leaf pack stack. No flex, means no traction and then no crawl. Deaver can build you a set. https://deaverspring.com/product-cat...-springs/ford/
Back in the day 35x14.50x16.5 TSL SX Super Swampers on the front.
35" Boggers on the back.
Mil take offs bias ply 36x12.50x16.5
35" Boggers all the way around.
The mil take off 36's kinda fail as a snow tire. Unless you are on the skinny pedal.
And now days after redoing the truck it has 38.5x14.50x16.5. I think I am going to bump down to mils takeoffs 37's on black spokes to get better fender to tire clearance in a turn.
They can be built to crawl with the best of them. This is a fellow FTE member's rig getting after it.
Yes that chrome is worth cha ching to the right guy. Since you do not have it on the bed, you might as well take it off the rest of the truck and get some $ for it.
That’s a good looking rig. I’ll figure out my tire situation at some point. The ones on it aren’t too bad other than age they just saw mud so no rocks to beat up the tread or sidewall. The driver side front has a gash in it though which is disappointing but oh well. Yes I definitely want to get rid of the dump truck leaf pack. The bed is off a new truck not sure what happened to the original one so I guess might as well rip the rest of the chrome off
Thanks, it took me quite a while to get it done, but it finally is. Take that tire to a tire repair shop (maybe a local big rig shop) that can do vulcanization. And then run a tube in it, that is what I did on this tire. Yes it is a off road rig only, plus have bead locks and run only 10 to15 PSI anyway. Best 70 bucks I ever spent. I am sure Utah has folks that vulcanize tires, since it is a off roading meca.
Do not RIP that chrome off, be careful do not bend it. Small acorn nuts hold it on the fender and 2 nuts and plastic clips to the door. Repop race trac trim is 150 to 160 if you can find it in stock.
We’ll see what happens. It’ll take me a while to get this one done, I have some other projects as well I need to attend to. All depends on how much I can spend. I’ll be careful with that chrome, I’ll remove the front clip anyway when I pull the motor maybe I’ll take the chrome off at the same time.
I hear ya on projects, I have three 4wd F250's (77, 78, 79) and 2 early Bronco's (71 and 73). And I constantly have the son in laws 76 Bronco crawler at my place to work on. If you want it to flex and crawl like a mountain goat on crack. Do a 3 or 4 link the front and back, long reach shocks and a little smaller tires so you can flex and stuff them.
Once the front clip is off, the chrome comes off way easy.
I don’t need it to flex to much but definitely more than the rest will currently allow lol. I want it to have big tires and big lifted springs to give it that classic big lifted truck look
If ya wanna save some money over custom springs in the rear and don't mind doing some work, look for any used rear lift springs in the 4-6" range, I know Super Duty springs are fairly common, but I also see alot of Chevy lift springs. Then buy some weld on anti-wrap spring perches for the width of the spring, some stock replacement spring hangers and shackles for whatever the spring came off of and fit it all up with a shackle flip in the rear to eliminate the factory block which will soften the suspensions and give it a lot more flex.
For under $500 I had used, stock height 2010 F350 rear springs mocked up in my '79 f250, using Dorman replacement hangers from Rockauto for a 1995 F350 and anti-wrap spring perches from Barnes 4x4, flipped rear shackle, no block. It was around 4" over stock height on a 35" tire. The springs cost me $200 with good shackles, all the hangers, which came with mounting hardware, were under $200 and the spring perches were like $30. It cleared a 35 x12.5 x 17 without issue even when I flexed it up a little. Adding a stock 3" block, or a +4" spring, would've easily cleared a 38", maybe even a 40" tire, but i think axle wrap might to become an issue and might warrant a trac bar at that point.
X2 on using chevy 3" wide 64" long leaf's and a rear shackle flip. Using the Ford or chevy rear shackle hangers to get the 3" wide needed. And then using a Ford 2wd rear spring, front hanger, since it has a longer drop.
That’s not a bad idea, I might do something like that. I thought about doing super duty springs but it also doesn’t have to be one ton spring. Might be better if it isn’t a 1 ton spring because that way it will flex more. This truck won’t ever pull any weight so I’m not concerned about it
