Shocks worn out?

How can I tell if my shocks are worn out? I always thought a very bouncy ride indicated worn out shocks. I think my truck (1980 F250 4X4) still has the original shocks but the ride is very harsh, not bouncy. When I bought the truck 8 years ago it looked like the shocks were either original or had not been changed in a long time since they were covered with rust and grime. I had a similar harsh ride in a Toyota truck that was much smoother after replacing the stock shocks with Monroe Gas Magnums. I know its going to have a harsh ride no matter what since it is a truck, I just want to know if I'd be wasting my money by putting Monroe shocks on. I drive mainly around town, little highway and offroad, usually with an empty bed. It does have a smoother ride with weight in the bed but I think that has something to do with the springs, not shocks. I have 33X12.5X16.5 BFG all terrain tires at 30 pounds pressure.

Jump up and down on the bumpers until you get a good bounce going, then stop. If the bouncing doesn't dampen, then you've got bad shocks.

As far as Monroe shocks go, I've got a post for the same problem, using Monroe shocks ( see Tired of my F150's Harsh Ride ). I've used Gabriels too, but hated those.
