I have a lot of creaks and groans coming from me. We used to find worn synchro's and bearings might cause that problem. Or, the detents might be worn enough to not hold. 3 or 4 speed, Steve. Have both if needed depending on the length of the tail shaft.

Thanks George. It is a three speed out of a '64. I intend someday to put an overdrive transmission in that I have setting on the bench with a busted cluster gear. I have the new cluster gear and gasket set but it is on the list! LOL I think I even have the overdrive relay, the solenoid and the centrifugal switch but it has been so long I would have to do some digging. Even have the drive shaft the proper length for it but it just will not seem to install itself!

One of the 3 speeds I have is out of a 64. Steve, I have found out that it is easier to write down what was accomplished that day rather than make a "honey do" list. I wonder if I have a OD trans for a Ford. Know I have one for a 55-57 Chevy.
