is it a capable off-roader?

Several times a year we would take our 97 f-150 4x4 out to do some adventure driving on trails, desert or whatever we could find. You know basic so cal stuff like Anza boreago, Bid bear etc.

We just bought a 2001 X Limited 4x4 yesterday and haven't had it off road but will at some point soon. What am I going to find out? Will it perform as well as the f-150? Will I have fun or is it going to be a chore to have fun in off road?

After x-mas we will install a 4" lift with rims and tires. What then?

Just want your opinion.

Thanks

I AM A RECENT NEW OWNER OF A 00 X LIMITED V-10 4X4 AND HAVE YET TO TAKE IT OFF ROAD AND MAY NOT FOR A WHILE.I HAVE OFF ROADED SEVERAL OTHER VEHICLES AND WOULD THINK THAT THE X,IF ONE WANTED,COULD BE A VERY CAPABLE MACHINE,(CONSIDERING ITS SIZE)WITH THE COMPONENTS UNDERNEATH IT YOU COULD MAKE IT AS BAD AS MANY HEAVILY MODIFIED VEHICLES.THERE ARE ALOT OF GUYS OUT THERE WITH LOTS OF CASH IN THEIR RIDE WHO WOULD LOVE TO HAVE THE BEEF UNDER THEIR RIG THAT YOUR STOCKER HAS.FROM THE FRONT AXLE THRU TRANNY,TRANS. CASE TO THAT MONSTER REAR AXLE AND BEYOND.I CANT WAIT FOR MY WIFE TO GET READY FOR HER NEXT VEHICLE SO I CAN HAVE AT THIS ONE.PROBABLY NOT MUCH HELP,BUT JUST SOME THOUGHTS.

Thanks for the reply.

I agree, way overbuilt. And that is a good thing. I am more worried about the SIZE and weight of it. I guess I won't be doing any rock crawling so I should be fine. It does sit sort of low for as big as it is. Clearance in the middle and over the ends could be a problem. Just have to be a little more careful. Guess I will just have to put a lift on it!

Have you noticed that the interior rattles and makes a lot of noise over bumps, dips etc. Almost sounds like the interior panels aren't bolted down enough. My f-150 didn't make nearly as much noise inside. Well, I guess there wasn't as much of an inside to rattle like the Excursion.
