We've pulled for years with a vented 5th wheel gate and this is our second year with the stock gate and pulling I've noticed 0 difference and no real defence when not pulling but our truck has a lot of tool boxes in the back so that may make a difference.
I run with one. Can't open regular tailgate all the way and just hitch up. I'd have to back in past tailgate then close gate then hitch up. On unhook I had to open the gate after I'm off the hitch then pull forward and level 5th wheel. Last 5th wheel wasn't like that. It's a long bed of that matters or not. Much easier with the 5th/goose tailgate to do it all in 1 motion vs in and out of truck and extra steps.
It's about 2" too short of clearing with the tailgate down. That assumes I'm dead on straight vs cocked to one side or another like most narrow campground roads have me needing to swing in or out
I can lower the tailgate while hitched, but it is so close that I don't trust myself to be perfectly straight when hitching, so raise it before running the pin home.
If I damage the tailgate, it's an easy insurance covered replacement. Replacing that door on the front of the camper, while also insured, would be near impossible due to non-availability of parts.
