the center portion of the lifter where the push rod sits is gone. not sure if the original problem was a hydraulic lifter failure, leading to slack on the pushrod and then it coming off center and getting bent/broken, or if it was a high rev situation w/ valve float or a sticky valve that led to all of this. PO only owned the truck for a couple of yrs and didn't do much with it. I acquired it a year ago and drove it in my garage last summer. it's been sitting since then while I figure out some of the things that are needed to get it running again. it was up on a lift until recently because I had another project parked under it. I was working on mitigating leaks while it was up on the lift (transfer case, rear diff, oil pan etc. the other project car is at the painters now so I have the opportunity to crawl around in the engine bay to take care of engine things.
If the bottom of the lifters you pull out are good, you can install new and run it with proper break-in and proper oil.
i would guess- the deal was over-spun.
Did you find the missing pieces or are you pulling the pan next?
The bottom looks good, not over worn, which makes be believe the cam is still ok. I'm about to pull the intake and valley pan gasket to look for the other parts and to remove the other lifter (not sure if the one I snagged with a magnet through the head is from the intake or exhaust). I'm also missing about 1" of one of the pushrods that broke. I'll take a borescope to look into #1 spark hole to see if the piston was damaged.
by "pan" are you referring to oil pan? I had that off already to replace a gasket and didn't see any chunks of metal down there.
Dizzy out, intake out. Found the piece of broken pushrod, the missing pieces that came out of the lifters. All in the valley. I found another bent pushed and another one completely broken in 2. No wonder this thing ran like a dog. S gaskets on the ends were both blown out.
i removed all the rockers and rods and will replace all the lifters and rods at the same time. I’ll clean up all the rocker arms.
Ouch. Wonder what created that "mayhem"? Might be worth using a bore scope thing and looking in each cylinder ... or better yet, pull the heads at this point.
pulling the plugs next. will look in all cylinders w/ a borescope. plan on doing a leak down test. I found one of the valves on #8 to be shorter than the rest in that row. thinking a bent valve. with all these things adding up, wondering if timing chain skipped a tooth. heads will probably come off and go to a machine shop to be rebuilt. boy o boy, are we having fun yet?!
