Does 9" rear (rwd) diff have a drain plug?

I got a 1978 f100 (rwd w/ 300 engine and 3 speed manual)

I have never checked the differential fluid and frankly have no idea how to top it off. What's the procedure for checking and changing fluid on this thing?

The factory 9 inch in a 78 does not have a drain plug. It only has a fill/check plug.
You should be able to take a 3/8 inch drive ratchet and insert the square drive into the fill plug located on the third member cast housing. Should be on the driver side.
With the vehicle on relatively level ground, removing the plug you should be able to just stick a small finger in and touch gear lube.
If not, you can add more through the same hole until it just starts to dribble out.

Yes it does. It's a really big plug on the front of the axle which can be removed once you remove the driveshaft and about 20 retaining nuts!

Ha that's clever all right. You forgot the part of having to take a chisel and cut the copper washers in half to get them off.

Here is the check and fill plug on the dvr side, do it just like Basecamp said. As far as taking the drive shaft and nuts off...He means pull the 3rd member, after you pull the axles out 1st...that it the only way to 100% drain and clean it out.

And NO 80/90 gear lube is not suppose to look like a milk shake. A 3rd member can crush a finger/hand/wrist when removed improperly. Weighs around 50 to 70 lbs.

And if you try to vac it out, 80/90 is thick and you will not get all the gunk/sludge out the bottom of the housing.

If you pull it and drain to clean it can stink up a garage for a surprising amount of time. Best to get rid of old grease fast.

And here is a WAY better and safer way to pull it.

100%. Nothing smells worse than well worn gear oil and it lingers for a long time. Do the work outside and try not to spill any. Also, wear gloves. It will soak into your skin and you’ll smell it on yourself for days.

And if you do pull it, make sure and replace the copper crush washers and get yourself a Lube Locker Gasket.

I'm still of the mindset that since I need a new pinion seal, gonna pull those 5 bolts and pull the pinion "cartridge" (pinion carrier with pinion in it) and do the seal on my work bench, etc, and scoop ... or use a grease pump to pull all I can ... out through the hole. I will reuse the same shims, and have a new square edge O-ring for it from Ford. I'll do it outside in the yard.

I do like that jack adapter for the whole hogshead though.
