360 Distributor timing.

Hey all. This 360 FE is kicking my butt good! First issue was it was so stuck in the intake there was no way to advance or retard the timing. I finally did get it to partially turn but in the process broke off the vacuum advance so I just went ahead and bought a new distributor. Now the marks on the balancer are nearly vanished and hard to read. My question is when I try to drop it in its difficult to go in and doesn't want to line up with number one cylinder. It has to be dead on the mark before it will drop in all the way? Its been many years since I have had to mess with timing or distrubutors so I am like my old 1971 model. Rusty!! lol Any information will be helpful. I cannot get it to start even with many new parts.

Lining up the rotor with the number one cylinder isn't so important as making sure the number one cylinder is wired to the terminal that the rotor will fire first in its rotation. You may have to turn it half a tooth or so to get it to seat. I just make sure the rotor is pointing in the general direction of cylinder 1 and stab it.

I understand what you are saying. Its been ages since I had to do this and just forgot that I could bump the engine a bit. Thanks for the reminder. Its late but will do that tomorrow.

Distributor

First with the #1 spark plug out turn the engine over to be sure that #1 is in the firing position. Try to probe the piston to feel if it is all the way up. Look at the timing marks on the balancer. Make sure that the tdc mark lines up with the pointer. Sometimes the outer balancer wheel slips and the marks are way out of line. You need to know this first.
Since you know where the rotor should be pointing when the distributor is in place hold down on it while jumping the solenoid and the oil pump shaft will finally go into the distributor shaft. You may have to repeat the process to get the vacuum advance to be in the correct position with the rotor lining up with the #1 on the cap.
