My 4.9L I6 is ready for the recycling bin, it has noisy bearings low compression on #6 a bad coolant leak at the back and 150,000miles on her.
I want to purchase a remanufactured engine but I am not sure what type of emissions this thing is setup for. The parts guys keep asking me, "is your engine A.I.R. into head, or A.I.R. into exhaust.??"
My block doen't have an ID label that I can see, but I'll give you guys the number from the label on the front of my valve cover and see if anyone can decipher it.
CK250AA (big numbers/letters) and 136508635 ( small numbers, maybe serial #?) the date is 9/03/91
I found that my truck has a hose running into the exhaust. My airpump has two connections that I can see, one to a coffee can on the passenger side wheel well, and the other airpump hose comes up to the top of the engine and goes thru a vacuum-controlled check valve then runs down under the exhaust manifold to the exhaust. I think that settles it, but I still have doubts. The jasper guy told me I would see 6 lines going to the head, haven't seen those.
there is a steel tube that looks like an oversized fuel rail that runs down the head. This is the air injection log, and it should be hooked up to that vacuum operated air pump line.
Yea, I see the steel tube, or air injection log. I need to find out if it goes into the head or exhaust. As far as I can tell, it terminates into the exhaust before the cat. I don't see where it may go into the cylinder head. Getting the correct engine from Jasper depends upon this. I am good at basic truck repair, but still have alot to learn about all of the emissions controls and the ways they are burning up the unused fuels/gases.
Jasper offers four engines for the 4.9L. two of the engines are built to work with propane, and the other gasoline engines offered come ready for air into head, and air into exhaust. I was hoping Jasper could tell me for sure, but they haven't come up with a definitive answer for my question yet
By the way, The Jasper sales people seem to be very knowledgeable and good at returning phone calls and answering e-mails.
look for the air rail. its about an inch wide and should be brown rusted color. It has six tubes running to the head, probably about 1.5" long each. It looks almost like an oversized fuel rail. It sits a few inches above the fuel rail, hard to miss.
I have no other tubes around the fuel rail. I have the air into exhaust model, (sorry Monsenior). It's too late anyway, I have the new engine sitting on my garage floor. I am going to be very busy this weekend and probably will have to move my computer down to the garage and keep this website on for 24 hours a day for a while.
