E99 7.3 performance (Towing) upgrades
lastly, I agree. My TC is basically locked in 3rd and 4th. So it’s probably improperly tuned. With that said, as you slip the unlocked TC are you now putting less power to the ground since it’s being lost in slip? Is what you gain marginal because you’re gaining the sweet spot rpm but losing some power to slip?
the struggle is real! Ford has never (or atleast comparing any of the 5 different Ford trucks i have owed from 1988 to present) had a good grasp on their gearing. I owned a 1995 f250 2wd srw before my current e99 f350 zf6. Od is the same in both and I believe same as th3 zf5 in the 1992 f350 I owned. why ford added the gears where they did is beyond me. I assume it is some last ditch effort at fuel mileage or they assumed the .jority of their consumer were inner city or hwy up to 65 mph.....but I don't know. The 1995 f250 2wd srw had 4:10 gears, the e99 drw 4x4 has 3.73. I really miss the 4:10 gears when loaded. My truck is rated at 13,500 fiver /gn and I have never hauled more then 10,500 lbs.....in a 2011 wolf pack 295 ,34' oal by 12' 6" tall toyhauler. I have always felt in the auto, zf6 and zf5, that I needed a gear dead center between 5th and 6th or 3rd and 4th in that auto and 4th 5th zf 5. In my zf6, with my current build, I have a major hole between 5th and 6th. I will not hold 2500 plus rpm for 20 mins let alone 5 hrs, it gargle fuel lol. my truck is happiest between 2100 rpm to 2300 rpm as in power vs mpg. I generally shift at 2500 when towing the toyhauler. In 5 th gear, at 65 mph is 2600 rpm. 65 mph in 6th is 1850 rpm and it lugs and thats when egts rise. I say this as I 100% agree that a 10 speed would be a night and day difference and a bone stock engine would do far more then many realize. I wish I would saved the money on all the mods, left stock inj's, maybe a drop in kc turbo , not sure how much better that is over a modified e99 turbo, and the hydra tuner with intake and exh. I added the adrenalin hpop and would again especially with stock injectors. When the oem inj's needed replaced i would go with the l99 with 30% tips just because.
my e99 f350 4x4 drw zf6 just turned 142k miles. I still like the truck and need to find the damn exh leak. I went t4 up pipe kit and sxe 363/68 - .91 exh. Brand new Hybrid 205/30 inj's from Bitterroot ( steer clear of full force diesel) , adrenaline hpop, full exh, stage 3 intake, high flow banjo fittings on fuel lines, fx fuel re route with 65 psi fuel reg spring installed, swapped to l99 intake tins for the sxe turbo ( kind of regret that as I feel it made it louder), boost fooler to keep that cel from coming on, high v high frequency I'm because I chased a poor idle for a long time thanks to full force diesel, hydra tuner and have tried tunes from 4 diff companies. So far php and aa have been the best.
I do not regret the mods, not yet anyway. Stockish mode is what the oem in 60 hp tow mode was. I can go up from there. I have not lost mpgs but haven't gained any either. The truck is now louder then stock but the turbo is quieter then the oem. I still pre fer the bottom end with the e99 turbo.
all of those mods because towing my 2011 wp 295 34' toyhauler at 10,500lbs loaded, at 75 mph, from Eastern Nebraska to st Anthony Idaho sand dunes , down I80, north at rock springs to hot lava springs then north to st Anthony dunes ...... was a bit more then a stock truck with intak exh and a dp tuner had in it. Saw higher egt on the pulls and lost 5 to 10 mph at times. The stock e99 turbo didn't have enough top end lung and the 3.73 were a problem too. Needed a gear between 5th and 6th along with 4.10's and that stock turbo might have just fine.
if I were to do it again ( I won't, ill buy a used fl70 or m2) intake, exh, hydra, drop in kc turbo, swap gears to 4:10's and keep it under 11k lb loaded for those long trips with extra time to get where I was going.
