Spare Tire Storage

Hey everyone,

Wanted to see current ideas / setups for a spare tire location. I have a 1996 F-350 Super Cab, 8 foot bed that I'm about to put a slide in camper into and travel for a while. My only issue is I'm wondering where I should mount a spare tire to. Current set up is 37x13.50. Any help is appreciated.

Custom rear bumper?

you can go with a 6' camper and put it between the cab and camper.

Or, run the factory under bed spare a good tire repair kit, and a compressor.

Got the repair kit and a compressor, wondering how large a tire I can fit in the factory area under the bed.

6ft camper isn't a bad idea, didnt even think of that. Thanks!

If mounting a camper farther back, Just understand what center of gravity is on a camper, I don't think you will have an issue but make sure it's forward of the axle centerline.

I have a locking camper shell and I kept my 35" spare in the bed. The factory spare tire location is not big enough to fit a 37" tire. You would have to mount the tire below the frame rails for it to clear.

There are a couple companies that make front receivers or front receiver RSK brackets that integrate the front shackle. If your camper doesn't stick out past the back of the bed you could look into a swing-away mount like the OBS Bronco utilized but I would definitely reinforce the back side of the box if you were going to mount a 37" tire on swing-away mount.

RSK Front Receiver

Can you fit the 37" tire in the factory location if you don't air it up all the way? I am not familiar with the 96 models, but I have read where others were able to fit the larger tires (even 37's) under the newer trucks by not inflating it all the way. Since you are carrying a compressor, maybe this is an option?

There is enough room for a deflated 33 but not a 37.

That is my original 235/85R16 spare or a 31.5" tire.

IF you get a flat tire and IF it's on the rear and IF you are in 2wd, it's going to take a few minutes to put the front 37" tire on the rear and put the stock spare on the front.
forget all this hand wringing it's not a big deal to run a smaller tire on the front for a few miles.
IF you're worried about being in the way back country where nobody goes, that's not
going to happen with a slide in camper.

custom mount to the rear hitch
if yiu have a front off road bumper with receiver yiu can mount it there but possibly have airflow issues
mount on top of the camper if it has a roof rack
plastic bag it and put it in the camper

I left the spare tire where Ford put it. I’m able to remove it with the camper in place (AF990) by using the first length of the Ford tool with a portable impact driver I carry in the truck.

Camper not on in this photo but you can see how it doesn’t interfere. 17mm socket first length of Fords tool.

I had to remove that special key lock on my 02 f350 so I could use my square bit attached to my drill to raise/lower the spare tire. Downside is now anyone could steal the spare, but the upside is I don't have to hunt for the special adapter while on the side of the road. After having a couple blow outs you get good at raising the camper up on the jacks a bit to take the pressure off then jacking the truck up and getting the spare on.

If I had to relocate the spare I'd put a front hitch receiver on and make a bracket to mount the spare out up front like they used to do back on the 70s
