Personally, I like the language by Amsoil that I have found to not give "my friends" any issues - "In a pinch, while it’s generally OK to use an oil that’s one viscosity rating higher or lower than what the manufacturer recommends, it’s best to use the viscosity given in the owner’s manual."

I maybe wasn't clear in my original post but I was in the process of changing my oil when I noticed that the previous oil was done with 5w20. I noticed because I had 2 quarts in a 5 quart container clearly labeled 5w-20 that was left over from the previous oil change. The 5w20 was in the engine for 3000 miles. I was changing oil earlier than my normal 4500 interval because we are about to take the truck out west on a ski trip. I don't think I did it much if any damage but would not recommend 5w20. I will say I did record my best ever empty road trip mpg of 16.1 on a 400 mile trip. Gas mileage is not a priority for me as I mostly use this truck for it's intended purpose of pulling and hauling. It's not a commuter or grocery getter. If I don't need the truck I take my 35 mpg Honda Accord.

Last year we had my wifes Edge Sport with a 3.7 engine in the Ford shop for a water pump replacement and the next day went to back her car out of the garage and couldn't help notice it was making a rattling noise. Traced the noise to the cam phasers and then identified they used 5w30 oil. Changed to a 5W20 oil and the noise went away.
