I am getting the famous squeal @ start up and have been reading about soft start voltage regulators . The alternator I have (200-amp) does not have the internal regulator , external only . On my external reg. A- S (stator)and F(field) is being used with no I.
In the process of changing belts and curious if any one has ever hooked up an internal(soft start) regulator externally . After Much research on a soft start regulator( Internal) ,this uses A S I, with the F- field being hooked up (not in that jack )but externally on screw outside of this jack.
The new belts may calm my squeal, as i will clean the pulleys .Curious any one ever hook up an internal regulator (soft start) externally and is this wired the same. Will it match A S F with the case being grounded .Yellow/w=A Green/red=S Orange/blue= F .Thoughts ???? TR
I have not heard of this either please keep us posted on the out come.
I also want to say I had the same issue with my 300 six when I first got it on the road.
I had a timing cover oil leak and had to change the gasket.
When I was putting it back together I seen the belts did line up right.
I took a little more time on alinement and no more noise on start up.
I would also take some sand paper, 220 grit or courser, to the pulleys the ALT belt runs in.

I did find out that an auto parts person sold me the wrong belt,It as been on there 14 mos, usually I check this (and behind them )but no telling what was happening back then .This belt was the power steering .In the process of changing all three belt plus adding the GR814 soft start regulator. Belts arrive tomorrow.
I think I’ll keep my original connector splice my new 814 connector from that and running a wire (Field) to this (on outside). I is not used in my application and ,ground the case real good .May use metal spacers as my field will need a bolt through the case.
10-4 on the sand paper ,I know this makes a difference .
I can honestly say I cannot remember have starting squeals ,but this has been frequent recently.
My 92 bronco uses the voltage regulator on the alternator ,but has the great serpentine belt .
Will update with pictures!

Got the new belts installed ,cleaned the pulleys up with sandpaper and steel wool ,what a pita .Took hours to complete, but the squeal is gone .Going to install the soft start (814 ) (internal regulator )as I am gathering parts .
On reading and searching posts ,a member states the soft start reg.works every time there is a load turned on in your vehicle .I do not think that is correct but can do more testing after installation .Soft Start seems to be @ starting only. More research TR
Yeah that squeal was annoying , it also happened after start up goosing on gas until warm .Once warm no problems .I spent time on them pulleys cleaning ,resting starting back etc .Nice, for a tool to automatically clean them lol, with out removing .Oh well , I will post my soft start regulator in stall in a new thread .TR
