i am getting ready to buy a winch for my 98 f150, i was wondering if there is anywhere i could mount it except on a bar. on the intake hole in the front bumper there is nothing back there. i was trying to figure out if there was any way possible that i could mount one in there. i am not looking for one that is real big, but something mid sized that would pull me out of some mud (yeah its a 2 wheel, but its tuff). any ideas? good winch brands? i am thinking about getting a fabtech desert guard, but i don't think i can mount one on it behind the skid plate.
You could get the Hitch mounted winch and Mount a Recever hitch in the front of your truck, Some make them where there fairly well hidden. Plus you can get the Cable kit so you can move the winch to your rear hitch if needed. Then during the times you won't be needing it you can leave it at home. Check out the Warn web site they have that winch/kit so ya can check it out
i looked at the warn and superwinches so far and i can only find a hidden mount kit for f250's. after getting my truck stuck and having to dig it out 3 times last weekend, i gotta figure out something, i might just buy a four wheeler for my deer lease, but they are kinda expensive. or i might just have to fab one up myself. any other ideas guys. by the way, i am having a bad day after the texas and texas a&m game today.
Having a 2 wheel drive also & having looked into winches too, I can tell you that the best solution I saw and am probably going to go with when I buy is the receiver mounted option. Yeah, you pay a little more for it, but in my eyes the added versatility of being able to winch from the front or back is worth it. The only thing it doesn't provide is the "coolness" factor of having a nice big'ol winch mounted up front. But then thieves see that nice big'ol winch mounted up front too.
The only negative I have encountered is that it tends to mount the winch pretty low, so you need in most cases to put the hitch in the receiver *before* the entire hitch assembly is buried in the mud - or carry a shovel too!
On the plus side; not carrying that 100+ pound winch on the front 24/7/365 increses the life of the suspension, and improves fuel mileage.
but if you are tight on money, you might look into having a shop fab a hidden mount behind the bumper and buying a mile marker 9000lb electric winch for 400 bucks. i have one and love it.
if you aren't gonna be using it very often and just need a tug eveyr now and then Harbor Freight sells an 8000lb winch for $299.00. I have a Warn 8274 up front and then Harbor Freights winch out back. I made my own bumper out of I-beam for the cost of 5lb's of 7018 welding rod.
I was looking at the warn mount on the internet the other day and I didn't see the F150 on the application list. my birthday and christmas is right around the corner, maybe i can sweet talk my family into getting it for me.
