3.48 Gears?

Did any of the 2000 Excursion 4X4s come with stock 3.48 gears. With the chunk cover removed, thats what is stamped on the gears inside. Is this factory original or has it been modified?

No. Only 3.73, 4.10 or 4.30.

Maybe that number refers to something else??

I wonder what the numbers do represent. Anyway, I'm still not sure what gear ratio is in it. Guess I'll just spin the tire and count the driveshaft rotations.
