F250/Excursion
Just a quick "hi" from a lurker and former Excursion owner (12 yrs in Ex) and now a 2014 F250.
I've been on here for a while but haven't posted much, mostly gathering info for various issues/fixes for the Ex but now doing a few things to the new (to me) F250. I've seen dozens of threads asking about maximum tire size. I just installed a set of Cooper Discover AT3 285/75/18 tires so I'll start a thread and attach pictures. These fill up wheel openings perfectly with no rubbing or issues. I'll also bust the myth about loss of power and greater fuel consumption. Actually, I'll tell you right here as well as a thread I'll start.
I have the 6.2 gas engine and the power loss is negligible. I feel no difference & I've been a car guy for decades, rebuilding, racing (offshore professional powerboat racing too) and complete frame-off restorations and engine building so I would notice a difference in power. I do quite a bit of fabricating things in metal and am a finish carpenter as well. A fun little side gig, I was a "master craftsman" on HGTV's Flea Market Flip for all 12 seasons (won an Emmy lol) and recently, season 1 just aired on our new tv adventure, History Channel's "Secret Restoration". all good fun but I own a construction company & build big custom homes & light commercial.
****On the fuel consumption myth, here are the facts. For a few months, I have been running a project 87 miles from home so the morning and evening commutes are EXACTLY the same in miles and time. I reset my fuel average once a month or so ago and on my daily 87 mile (each way) commute, I averaged 13.4 mpg. After installing the new 285/75/18 tires, I am now averaging 13.2 mpg. BUT.........
People say they are burning more with larger tires. Here is my analysis on this. Since I am traveling the same distance in the same amount of time, the larger diameter tires are telling the truck I am actually traveling less distance. In fact, I am traveling the same distance and time so the truck data "thinks" it's burning more fuel.
Go for the bigger tires folks, there is no negative downside!
