Advice buying 4x4 F250
Hi guys, first I'd like to say that you all give great advice and I really appreciate what this site is and does. My question is: I have found an F250 for sale that needs some work and I'd like to know if y'all think it's worth it. It is located far enough away the going to look at it would be a 3-4 hour drive.
The F250 is a 'heavy' F250, that is, it has 1 ton springs and a full floating rear. It's got a 351 in it that they say runs well mated to a manual transmission (they didn't say if it was the 4 speed BW unit or the 5 speed ZF unit). The bad: the body needs paint and the t-case pops into neutral. It's 4 wheel drive and the asking price is $1000. Unknown mileage (odometer at 35k but not known how many times it has rolled over).
The price sounds good, but given the t-case problem does it sound like this truck has been beaten? I saw a picture and it doesn't look like it had a plow on it, so I don't know how the t-case got hosed. If the t-case is going is the tranny on its way out too? Is this indicative of the condition of the rest of the truck?
The F250 would be replacing my old F150, which doesn't quite cut it anymore at work: I need it to tow 7k of equipment trailer with the bed full of gravel and the cab full of Mexicans. I know that's a lot to ask of a $1000 truck. The big thing the 150 has going for it is it looks nice; it's got fairly recent paint, otherwise it's hurting.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
