My 2017 F150 EB3.5(65K miles currently) is having timing chain /cam phaser issues. Also low oil pressure light has come on several times under moderate throttle. I have had the VCT recall work (reflash) done back in 2021 when it had 55K miles on it. Now its at the dealer with even worse rattle, and now loss of power under moderate throttle. I have an MPP 72mo/125K "Platinum" level extended warranty. The issue is the dealer contacted them to verify coverage. They recommend new chains/ cam phasers /solenoids. Also they think the cam could be damaged, but wont know until they are into it to verify. MPP (Mechanical Protection Plan) wont cover any of it since there are no codes or CEL present. Dealer is telling me to contact MPP and plead my case.
Has anyone had to deal with MPP or an issue like this. Out of pocket cost right now is looking like $5k. the engine was pretty low on oil and they want to see where the oil is going. They put dye in the oil and I am to drive for a couple of thousand mile to check if there is loss.
Just looking for some useful advice. Ive always had pretty good luck on FTE.
The MPP policy was sold to me by a different Ford dealer; if that makes a difference.
Denying warranty because no cel or codes sounds like a weak attempt at denying a warranty claim that should be honored. Loss of power under moderate acceleration could possibly be subjective but If the dealer is diagnosing an issue and the recommended fix is replacing mechanical parts seems that should be sufficient for the warranty to be honored.
FYI This past Monday when I took my 2016 f150 3.5l with 130,000 in for an intermittent coolant leak- I've added about 1.5 gallons in the past year, non- functioning radio, and non-functioning heated seats the service manager mentioned I had 10 days left on my extended warranty. I thought the warranty was good until July 23 or 140,000 miles so hadn't been super motivated to get it in the shop. Service manager called back later to say they are replacing the water pump and the cam phasers under warranty. I've had no CEL since I purchased the truck in 2018. I never mentioned cam phaser and haven't experienced any loss of power but the service center found an issue and are fixing it under warranty. They could have not said anything and sent me on my way knowing the warranty expires within days. Yes this is a Ford dealership and yes I am very pleased this is being taken care of under warranty. The extended warranty was purchased through the Ford dealership when I bought the truck. I would read the fine print on your warranty to find where it describes the coverage for this situation then call the warranty people.
Hope the warranty people see their way clear to covering your truck.
Sounds like an ASE certified mechanic, likely trained by Ford, working for a Ford authorized service facility diagnosed a problem. I don't understand why a CEL/MIL would be needed with such a diagnosis. They don't want to do the work because Ford pays the dealer poorly for it. Ask the dealer to contact a Ford district rep and that you would like to speak with them about the issue once they have been contacted.
This is an overview of MPP for anyone who may be searching for additional protection. Apparently they are hard to work with.
I would follow the dealer's advice and drive it like you stole it and see what happens. If and when the engine completely fails, they'll have a larger bill on their hands to get you rolling again.
I didn’t lay close enough attention. It’s not a Ford warranty, so contacting a Ford district rep will do no good. You might be better of taking it to the dealer who sold you that policy/warranty.
