87 F150 5.0 AT single tank long bed.
Sometimes my left rear brake light doesn't work. I put new bulb in it, still not, checked power, none. Tail light works.
I pulled connector on the rear, near the rear axle spring, power to the tail, but not brake light.
I wiggled the wires under the dash and then it works for a day or so.
Obviously something is loose, bad connection.
My question is what color is the wires that I am looking for?
I know where the indicator module is in the fuse block, where is the switch?
Could this be in the emergency light switch?
Where do I start?
Intermittent electrical issues! Fun...
I had no brake lights or turn signal lights, but the tail lights worked on my 88 f150. The issue turned out to be the turn signal switch in the steering column. I would check that. I learned its a common issue on these trucks, depending on tilt or no tilt its like $80-100. It is annoying to change, because you have to take the wires out of the connector and push it thorough the column. Its not that hard though. Maybe wiggle the wire running along the steering column for the turn signal switch and see if you get lights back? I don't know if I had power to the lights though, I didn't check that I just replaced it since it was missing a piece anyways.
This does help with diagnosis.
First I will try the curved connector under the dash.
It was moved a bunch when I changed the ignition switch.
Next will be the signal switch.
It has a fixed column.
Here’s a picture of one with tilt. I’m sure this is the curved connector your talking about, it’s the same connector tilt and no tilts, but this part will look different for the no tilt.
I had this same issue with an Explorer. It was the junction in the steering column where the light circuits split and run to the back. It cost me $650 to have it all sorted out by a local shop. The plastic had deteriorated and crumbled apart. They were able to find the part but the labor to cut and splice all the wires from the new part to the original harness was the killer in labor costs.. Was a PITA and I sold the truck not long after.
I have been reading up on this, you are a big help.
The truck is 36 y.o,
I have messed with the connector in passing, I will unplug it and put it back.
If that doesn't fix it, switch replacement.
Wiggling the wires to the fuse box seems to help, so the connector is near, might be wiggling it too.
Years ago the truck did the same thing once with both brake lights, wiggling the hazard light switch fixed it then.
