Oil consumption

I have a 92 F 250 with a 5.8. 72000 actual miles. No obvious leaks externally

Do these engines consume oil?

Had my oil change today and the interval between oil changes was about 3700 miles. The dip stick barely showed oil at the physical end of the stick

Obviously now I plan to l keep a closer look at it

Not all oil leaks are going to be visible. For example a rear seal failing will leak oil and it will not show up on your garage floor. I would also check the oil level before you leave the quick lube place to be sure you are getting the correct amount of motor oil. Engines do not take an even number of quarts of oil with an oil and filter change. There are special motor oils for "high mileage" vehicles and you might give this a try with your truck.

No telling with a 30-year old engine what problems may be resulting in higher oil consumption. You may have bad rings or a problem with the oil pan gasket or seals. I would expect that a search on the engine and year for high oil consumption may point to possible problem areas. In general it is very hard on an engine to be putting only 200 miles a month on it and having it sit or driven with the engine not fully warmed up (especially the motor oil and bearings).

Yes. All piston engines consume oil. A typical OHV V8 from this era should consume 1 qt every 1000 miles. I wouldnt get too concerned until it the consumption increases to 1 qt per 400 miles.
