Odd vibration noise
That’s the sound my 2001 7.3 Ex started making at or near highway speeds after hitting a bump, pothole or uneven pavement seams across the highway. Initially it was a short duration but most recently it has extended. the tone/pitch does not change with speed. It also occurs more frequently when turning or cornering to the right suggesting that it’s coming from the driver front wheel or suspension when it under forces, which is where I hear it. However a front passenger indicates they hear it coming from the rear passenger side. What’s odd is that it went away entirely for several weeks and then returned.
this all started after I had driven some rather rough backcountry roads in 4x4 Low and engaged/disengaged the wheel locks.
anyone encounter this before or have any suggestions on what to start investigating or ruling out?
I would hear the exact noise you described and while it was not consistent, it did occur more often if I hit a pothole or made a quick steering adjustment.
I had purchased a truck that needed front end maintenance. Ordered steering components and unit bearings. When I pulled the driver side for replacement, about 2/3rd’s if the needle bearings fell out and the cage was absolutely mangled. New bearings on and the sound never returned during my ownership of the truck.
I would suggest inspecting unit bearing.
