We drove home from St Louis to Tulsa today and had several instances of having a strange noise or vibration. It seemed to coincide with passing a truck in most cases, but can't be sure there was a connection.
It sounds like something fairly large flapping underneath. It makes a serious racket that feels like it is underneath the front floor, but is very noticed by the passengers in the rear seat. There are no lights or error messages, and it starts and ends abruptly.
I've looked underneath and can't see anything loose, but it is a very worrying noise. Anyone have ideas?
Who changes your oil? They could have left the heat/sound shield underneath the engine/trans unbolted or loose. That thing is a PITA so I removed permanently.

Ford changes it, and that was my thought as well - although not my first thought as it was so loud and we could feel it that I initially thought we were dragging something. I haven't gone under it, just bent down and looked, but I'll slide under it today and see.
As much noise and vibration as it was causing I'll be surprised if it isn't bent. But it should be easily found.
We had, what sounds a little familiar to your issue with our former 2005 Expedition. Loud obnoxious noise and vibrations that were intermittent and occurred going up an incline or into resistance, head winds or passing semi's. Dealer found it to be the front wheel hubs(4x4)were trying to engage on their own, had a vacuum leak or similar. Got it fixed and it did well for about a year and then returned. Thats when we decided to look for another vehicle and hence, got the 150.
Oh, I certainly hope that isn't what is happening! But, I don't think so in this case. Here's the email I just sent to the shop manager at Ford:
Bill - I've responded to our email chain to remind you of our previous discussion, but changed the title to go to add a new topic - a vibration or serious noise. Yesterday we drove home from St Louis and had five instances of a serious noise or vibration that got the attention of all 5 people in the truck. It feels like something under the front floorboard is badly flapping as the people in the front seats can feel it as well as hear it. And when it happens all attention is turned to it as it is very noticeable.
It seems to happen most frequently when we are passing or being passed by an 18-wheeler, but it happened once w/o another vehicle involved, so that isn't a given. And it starts suddenly and ends just as suddenly, and lasts for 10 to 30 seconds or so. There are no lights on the dash nor error messages, and we don't lose power and the steering wheel doesn't shake any more than the rest of the vehicle does. In fact, once it stops the truck is perfectly fine and is quite drivable during it.
Thinking about the conditions yesterday, we were going mostly west with a fairly strong wind out of the north when this happened. Later in the trip we were going southwest, meaning more with the wind, and it didn't happen then. In fact, it only happened in the first 200 or so miles of the trip and hasn't happened in the last 200 miles. So, it may be something to do with a cross wind or turbulence.
I checked the cover under the engine and transmission and the bolts are tight. However, if I pull down on the front corner of it and let go it vibrates and makes a sound very similar to what we heard/felt, although not nearly as severe. And there seems to be quite a bit of flex where the cover bolts on.
I know you will say "bring it in and we'll look at it", but I'm not quite ready to do that as we need to use it tomorrow - unless you say we shouldn't.
