Recently I noticed my truck vibrating at the following speeds; 31-33; 53-55 and 67 m.p.h. I took it in to my local mechanic who rotated and balanced the tires. He also told me that one of wheels wasn't true. The vibration at these speeds was very noticeable which was easily felt through the steering wheel. After the mechanic performed the work, the vibration was decreased significantly, however when I began towing 4,000 lbs it made a very odd sound and vibration and 67 and 72 m.p.h. The noise resembled a pulsing, vibrating, rubbing sound fairly similar to the noise made when you drive over a rumble strip on a highway. Once I sped up or slowed down it went away, and the problem is only noticeable at 67 and 72. I was fairly certain the noise/vibration was coming from the left front end, but not completely sure. I have no idea what could be causing this problem, neither does my mechanic. Thanks for any help in advance.
My truck is a 4x4. How can you tell if the hubs are disengaging, and if so why would they do it only at certain speeds? I also remeber my fiance driving my truck in town in 4-lo, but she had the common sense to go about 10 mph and her course was straight, i.e. no turns, thank god. This will not happen again. I considered my fiance's episode when the problem arose. Despite this I cannot reconcile why it only malfunctions at certain speeds.
I have no idea but maybe some of the others on here might help. The front driveshaft shaft (coming from the transfer case)should turn freely if it is unlocked. Other things I would check would be the shocks for leakage and the rubber grommets where the shocks attach at the top and bottom..give 'em a shake. Check your rotors for missing parts, jack it up and pull/push the tire at the top and bottom to see if your ball joints are wore out. Also, the bushings on the sway bars could be wearing out. Wheel bearings?? Hope this helps.
